In Loving Memory of the Spa

In loving memory of the Spa, I write this article, celebrating its history of providing quick, edible food, in a central location. The Spa was not perfect, but it offered comfort like McDonald’s does on a late night out. Now, the Spa only provides breakfast and lunch. This is convenient when there isn’t a dead fly in my salad, but dinner at the spa isn’t missed because of its quality. It’s mourned because of its convenience when you procrastinate your lab report over the weekend. However, the biggest thing I mourn about the Spa is its location. Foss is on the edge of the campus and doesn’t provide the necessary convenience when you’re on a tight deadline. All it offers every time is tacos. This leads me to ask why tacos have such a strong hold on Colby. Can we let it go, please?

So, what are your options if the new Spa is across campus and you have two hours left to write a lab report? You can walk a little farther and go to Dana, where food poisoning is always possible. Does anybody remember when Dana tried to continue the tradition of chicken tender night? To sum it up, my friend almost got salmonella because the chicken tenders were too big, causing them to be raw in the center. After waiting 30 minutes for chicken tenders, we just got chickens that were still clucking. Okay, so if you don’t want to risk the dangers of food poisoning, then I would suggest Bobs. It is close to the library but is constantly crowded at peak times. You could argue that there are lines everywhere but I would say Bobs is especially bad. Another sad point is Bobs menu. Last year, Bobs was one of my top dining halls, but now it’s near the bottom of my rankings. It’s trying too hard to be the new Foss. So, Bobs is too busy, and your only option now is to walk over to Foss. Last year, I didn’t mind walking to Foss because students generally acknowledged that they had the best food. When I say the best food—I mean the best quality—such as food preparation and seasoning. But to get food and walk back, I would factor in 90 minutes, depending on location, crowdedness, and such. And there isn’t prepared food, so you must use a to-go food container. So, by then, you’ve already got down to an hour left on your assignment.

I loved the Spa for its convenience and the ability to get to-go food quickly. Yes, you can get to-go food in other dining hall places, but no one wants to deal with the hassle of a to-go container. Or at least I don’t. I appreciate all the work that goes into feeding a population of 2,300 hungry college students. These are just my opinions and take on dining hall changes. Everyone is entitled to their views and I appreciate the dining halls always asking for our opinions.
