You may want to mark your calendars because the Maine 2025 Agricultural Fair schedule has been released! Whether you plan to go this summer or upon your return to campus, the fairs have a lot of events to check out, such as ferris wheels, fireworks, carnival games, food, farm animals, and more.
A total of 25 agricultural fairs are happening in Maine this year, with a total of 126 fair days. Plus, eight fairs will still be running after move-in day this upcoming fall.
The Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs (MAAF) represents these fairs and was started in 1912. The association also helps support agricultural education. The MAAF’s charitable organization was founded in 2023 to provide education to advance and improve agriculture science, fairs, expositions, and shows. Yearly, the foundation grants a minimum of two $2,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors pursuing post-secondary education in a field related to agriculture.
The agricultural fairs the MAAF represents are known for their variety of events and farm animals. Ava St. Laurent `28, who attends the Oxford fair almost every year, says, “There is so much to do. Usually, every day there is something different going on.” For fun events, she mentioned the Fryeburg Fair pig scramble, multiple demolition derby events, animal pulling events, games, rides, food, live concerts, and vendors.
Amongst all of these things going on, St. Laurent likes the demolition derby event at the Oxford Fair the most. “I really love the demolition derby. It’s super fun.”
If you do not know, demolition derby is an event where drivers intentionally drive their cars into each other in an attempt to disable them. The winner is the last driver still moving, or as St. Laurent says, “Whoever can last without their car blowing up wins.”
The Oxford Fair also has had themed demolition derbies, such as a minivan demolition derby. St Laurent said this event “was all minivans crashing into each other.” She further said, “It’s very entertaining.”
Besides the demolition derby, St. Laurent also enjoys visiting the animals at the fairs: “I really love all the animals, feeding the goats, and talking to the horses and the cows.” She also enjoys the tilt-o-whirl and going on the Ferris wheel to watch the sunset.
If you need fair recommendations, St. Laurent has some for you: “I recommend the Oxford Fair because it’s near and dear to my heart. It’s in my hometown, and it’s smaller than a lot of the other fairs, but I think that makes it more fun. You usually see people you know, or you can meet a lot of people in line. But, the Fryeburg Fair is also really cool.”
However, whichever one you go to, St. Laurent admits you can’t really go wrong. “They’re all good.”
