Colby Women’s Club Soccer Mid-Season Recap

This past weekend was a busy one for Colby women’s club soccer. The team played their home opener of the fall season against Bates College on Friday, Oct. 2, then traveled to Orono to play the University of Maine on Sunday. The team started the season with a doubleheader on Sept. 19 against Merrimack College and University of Massachusetts at Lowell. They lost both games, but “had the most fun ever,” according to their Instagram caption (@colbyclubwsoc, Sept. 20).

On Friday night, it was a scoreless first half. Bates put up a good fight in the first 45 minutes, and the energy was high as Colby men’s club soccer and friends of players filled the stands. Early in the second half, Sami Silberstein `29 scored. Bates answered soon after, and the game ended 1-1. Despite this result, according to Tessie Connell `29, the team “saw it as a great home opener.” Connell added, “We’re excited for the rest of the season.”

On Sunday, the team traveled north to play the University of Maine at Orono. They unfortunately lost 3-1, and their overall record is 0-3-1.

But, it’s not all about what happens on the field. “We have a strong executive board, experienced returners, and enthusiastic first-years on the women’s team,” Connell said. “We can’t wait to see how we do this season.”

The team is led by captain Kate Sahagian `27 and president Lucy Rayback `27, who are “super nice… and very supportive,” according to Mimi Skali Lami `30.

When Skali Lami was asked what drew her, as a first-year, to join Colby women’s club soccer, she noted, “I joined because I’ve played soccer my entire life and… wanted to continue playing.” Many members of the team come into Colby having played soccer in high school, looking for a way to keep playing the sport they love after graduation. But, there is a wide variety of experience amongst team members. “Some people just started this year or at Colby,” Skali Lami said.

The question then becomes, what keeps people coming back to play for women’s club soccer? “It’s been a really fun environment so far,” Skali Lami remarks on her first month on the team. “Everyone is really nice and supportive, and it really is what you make of it.”

Colby women’s club soccer has two more home games lined up this season. Catch them on Friday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m., or Sunday, Oct. 25 at 12:00 p.m., both on Bill Alfond field to support them through their season.
